2 Many DJs discuss plans to launch a free online radio station

The Dewaele brothers, who were behind 2 Many DJs’ landmark mash up album As Heard on Radio Soulwax Pt. 2, are taking to the airwaves this year.

David and Stephen, who record under many different guises including 2 Many DJs, Soulwax and the Flying Dewaele Brothers, revealed to 6 Music that during the first half of this year they plan to launch Radio Soulwax.

It’s set to be a free internet radio station featuring mixes of hundreds of tracks.

“We’re making 24 compilations that will rotate. Each hour is themed in a way and they are going to rotate in such a way that you would never hear the same thing twice,” explained David. “We will launch it as an online radio station so people could have it for free.

“It’ll have all the visuals as well and be regularly updated.”

Wider musical spectrum

People might expect Radio Soulwax to be an electro-house marathon, but David assured us it will take in a range of genres.

“For us, it’s a step forward is because we’ve been doing this, playing in clubs and releasing remixes and making dance music for the better part of the last six years,” he said, “It’s great and it works, but it can be limiting in certain ways. When I come home I don’t listen to Boys Noize.”

“We’ve spent the last 20 years of our lives raiding record stores and finding these beautiful, hidden gems,” he continued. “What this project allows us to do is spread the musical spectrum a little bit more and there’s these incredible things that we’ve found.”

David admitted it could be ‘insanity’ going down the radio route because it is costly.

However, the legal process they encountered when getting tracks approved for use on their 2 Many DJs remix albums, has deterred them from making another compilation.

“To have 200 tracks in an hour, to clear them, it’s impossible so by doing it with a radio license we bypass that problem and it’s free for everyone,” he said. “We don’t really care about record sales because we don’t live off record sales, we live off touring and playing.”

New album?

As for a new record under the Soulwax moniker, the band have revealed there is new material on the way, but they could not say what they plan to do with it yet.

They debuted six new tracks at gigs in the UK back in December that suggested the Dewaele Brothers are embracing a bit of psychedelia, while sticking to their tightly wound electro-punk roots.

It doesn’t look like they’ll be making an album though.

“There are new tracks and I think they really work well when we play them live,” revealed David. “The way things should work is you should put out a new record when you have something to say.

“I’m just not one hundred percent sure about the medium of albums anymore. Something will surface, but I’m not sure if that’s going to be a CD.”
